I recently had the opportunity to spend a beautiful day at Moonshine Juicery in Waterloo about two hours outside of Toronto. It was a wonderfully welcome escape amidst the craziness of fashion week, as well as a day to focus entirely on mental and physical wellbeing. As someone whose brain is running five hundred miles per hour (to the point where I’ve made myself physically ill), these pauses to focus inward are both necessary and important. From the moment I arrived at Moonshine, I felt calmer than I had in a long time. By the end of the day, I was refreshed and inspired….and all that after only about five hours. Follow along as I take you through my day of wellbeing with Moonshine Juicery.
First of all, let’s talk about this location. Moonshine Juicery is on a farm alongside The Timeless Material Co. and The Timeless Café. After months in the big city, the wooden barns and brick homes were a welcome change. There is something intrinsically calming about farm life and the notion of creation that is occurring in this space.
The juicery itself is located within one of the refurbished barns. A bright white space with exposed wood beams and high ceilings, the building itself presents a sense of stillness with the scent of Palo Santo in the air.
Upon arrival we were greeted by the Moonshine Juicery founder, Corina, who is one of those people who seems to radiate love. I just want to hug her! I had only met her once before, during a talk she was giving about her other business and my favourite cleanse, GliSODin Skin Nutrients (there’s a blog post here), and I was so excited to see her again. I absolutely love to learn from and experience people who are aware of and in tune with the emotional aspect of self. Corina is one of those people.
With a degree in food chemistry and clinical nutrition, as well as over 15 years in the health product sector, Corina is a scientist at her core, so she has a real understanding of the effects and processes that what she creates have on our bodies. I drank her juices for two days afterward (alongside food because she doesn’t believe in fasting) and I haven’t felt so good in a long time, but more on that below.
I drink a lot of juice, but I’ve never had juice like that of Moonshine Juicery. They’re all made in-house with fresh, organic ingredients that are seriously delicious, but where they really differ is in their medicinal ingredients. The juices feed the physical body, as well as the emotional one.
With roots in Chinese medicine where energies are at the core of every being, Moonshine Juicery brings this notion into each of its juices. With a drink to focus on the functional improvement of each organ, as well as crystal and plant essences to feed the emotional side, Corina has combined both health and wellness into her juices in a way the feels almost magical. It’s impossible to explain until you try.
During lunch, we tried and enjoyed the four core juices: Earth, Air, Fire and Water for the liver, lungs, spleen and kidneys respectively. Emotionally, the essences in each juice aid with grounding, calming, energizing and balancing. Moonshine’s juices differ from others in that they aren’t about packing together as many “nutrients” as possible, but looking at different aspects of the body and putting together both nutritional and medical properties to give that specific target what it needs in the way that it needs it. I love it.
In addition to juices, the day was made complete by all the other wonderful amenities available at the farm. We had a visit from Province Apothecary to learn about dry brushing the face to help with the functioning of our lymphatic systems. If you haven’t tried it before, I highly recommend it! I have noticed improvement with both puffiness and tension in the face since I started doing it daily.
We also had the chance to each sit with Corina individually to discuss where we’re at both physically and emotionally (I may have laid all my issues on her within the first minute) and she created custom dry herbal tonics for each of us. Mine had ingredients such Hawthorn, Schisandra, Rose essence, Evening Primrose essence and more. It was like soul food that helped clear the mind when I drank it for three days after.
I also participated in my very first Full Moon Ceremony, an event that is held monthly at Moonshine Juicery on the day of the full moon. It is a special practice that is largely about turning inwards and listening to yourself, letting go of things that may be holding you back and setting intentions for the future. Although it occurred in a group, circled around candles and crystals, it was largely a private practice that would feed off the power of those around us. Regardless of environment or setting, I think this is something that is important to sit down and consider every now and again.
We also had the seriously cool, Anne Donahue, visit to read us our Tarot Cards. Not only is she good at what she does, she’s seriously funny and wonderfully honest, but only up to a point she knows you can handle. She actually uncovered some things during her reading that I hadn’t yet realized, but needed to. Thank you, Anne! As I was leaving my reading she yelled after me, “you can still be a hippie and angry as f***”, which sounds pretty funny, but was actually a deep look into my soul. This is what I love about her, she brings a comical light to even the most serious statements, so that they’re easier to handle.
All in all, this was one of the most special days I’ve had in a long time. I would visit Moonshine Juicery weekly. I feel inspired by Corina and all that she is doing and consider her someone that I want to learn from. Her approach to emotional and physical health tastes delicious and feels amazing, so really, what’s not to love?
Because I just can’t get enough of her and of Moonshine Juicery, I’ll be heading to Port Dover from November 17-19th for their three day Moon Retreat at Clonmel Castle (yup, castle)! I’m so so excited to immerse myself for three days of non-stop Moonshine amazingness. With juices, yoga, meditation, journaling, time in nature, a new moon ceremony and more, I feel wonderful just thinking about it. I have so much to learn about myself, so I can’t wait to continue on this journey.
If you’re interested in joining me (I would seriously love that), you can check out the details or sign up for the retreat here. We would love to have you there!
These last few photos were taken at the amazing Timeless Material Co., also located on the farm alongside Moonshine, where they make furniture out of refurbished wood. There is so much cool stuff there!
